Named for the black tree-fern, Mamaku is a musical themed artwork, turned and carved from one piece of Pohutukawa. I added the top/bottom bridges and legs, also from Pohutukawa, and the “strings” are stainless steel wire.

Chain Link Bowl

Hand crafted whittled chain link bowl which has 129 individual links attached to the frame. Made of Redwood from one solid piece of timber. Initially turned and then the links whittled by hand using knives. Size 280mm wide and 170mm high.

This pohutukawa was discarded by at least 3 other woodturners, riddled with splits I gave it purpose, the inside is rimu with gold wax, width 19cm height 9.5cm.

Hoop Lamp

Totally made from Pinus radiata.  This lamp stands 450mm high and is 360mm diameter. The shade was wet-turned to about 1mm thickness.  The other parts all came from the same log.  Finished with spray lacquer.

A Stand of Tubes

Six casuarina tubes turned wet and allowed to warp with a finial of nashi pear.

Finished using wire brush, carving, ammonia fuming, oil, wax and paint.

All have a base thickness of about 7mm and height up to 22.5cm.

Inspired by Pacific voyagers, this multi-axis turned piece from Black Maire has turned mast and boom, steam bent and ebonized with indian ink. The sail, turned to about 2mm thick is nicely figured Rimu.

Basket Tea

The pot, lid and spout are sycamore with a pyrography basket weave and ball design. The knob is deer antler. The handle is bamboo attached to two small carved lugs. Dimensions 160mm x 90mm high. Finished with lacquer.
