Named for the black tree-fern, Mamaku is a musical themed artwork, turned and carved from one piece of Pohutukawa. I added the top/bottom bridges and legs, also from Pohutukawa, and the “strings” are stainless steel wire.

The inspiration for this piece came from when I went into my woodshed and a family of Geckos had made this burl their home .
Hand crafted whittled chain link bowl which has 129 individual links attached to the frame. Made of Redwood from one solid piece of timber. Initially turned and then the links whittled by hand using knives. Size 280mm wide and 170mm high.
This pohutukawa was discarded by at least 3 other woodturners, riddled with splits I gave it purpose, the inside is rimu with gold wax, width 19cm height 9.5cm.
Finish is satin rattle can.
Symbiosis - the coalescence of two raw elements resulting in an organic, elegant pairing. Simplicity at it’s finest. Timber: Macrocarpa and Poplar Burl. Size: 223mm x 49mm. Finished with Danish Oil.

Totally made from Pinus radiata. This lamp stands 450mm high and is 360mm diameter. The shade was wet-turned to about 1mm thickness. The other parts all came from the same log. Finished with spray lacquer.

Constructed from NZ grown timber using tapered, wedged mortise & tenon joints glued using hide glue. The backrest is steam bent & laminated black walnut. White oak spindles, wych elm seat pan, white ash legs & stretchers. Finish Osmo PolyX-Oil.
Elm legs inspired by steam bent spade handles turned green, split on the band saw, steam bent and dried. Walnut tops fitted to the leg angles, wedged & glued. Finished in Osmo PolyX-Oil. Larger table 620x400x550mm high, smaller 750x470x450mm high
Coffee Table made with a Chestnut base, Elm top and Oak pebbles stacked to a height of 420mm, with the top diameter of 360mm. This has been burnt, brushed and dyed. With a centre dowel for stability.

This is a multi-axis turned and carved artwork made from Black Maire.
The vessel is turned on multiple centres to create a three sided vessel.
Six casuarina tubes turned wet and allowed to warp with a finial of nashi pear.
Finished using wire brush, carving, ammonia fuming, oil, wax and paint.
All have a base thickness of about 7mm and height up to 22.5cm.
Turned from Pear wood, lines burnt with pyrograph then textured with a round burr and airbrushed with iridescent paint. Lacquered finish. 135mmdia x 190mm high. Wall thickness 7mm
This vessel has been dye from the inside out to make the colours make cell like patterns and metallic powders wash down to make it look like it's alive and moving.

Turned and hollowed from a somewhat beaten up piece of Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). 190mm high. Finished with Rustins Danish oil.

Inspired by Pacific voyagers, this multi-axis turned piece from Black Maire has turned mast and boom, steam bent and ebonized with indian ink. The sail, turned to about 2mm thick is nicely figured Rimu.
The pot, lid and spout are sycamore with a pyrography basket weave and ball design. The knob is deer antler. The handle is bamboo attached to two small carved lugs. Dimensions 160mm x 90mm high. Finished with lacquer.
The lid style on this pretty Yunnan Poplar (Populus yunnanensis) box allows for easy one-handed opening and closing. Box height 90mm.
Whilst inspired by the freedom of steampunk it also has elements inspired by the TV series Game of Thrones represented on the piece by my impression of leather armour. The wood has been ebonized then highlighted with gilders wax.160x200mm

A piece of locally grown American Elm (Ulmus americana) turned wet and then sanded when dry. Treated with Rustins Danish oil to enhance grain colour and then finished with spray lacquer. 270mm diameter.

Depicting a Nautilus Shell being washed up on a northern beach.
Made from segmented Zebrano (Zebra wood) with a hard Maple base supported on two 6mm brass rods. 210mm long.
NZ Falcon (Karearea) striking a Bellbird. Wood (including falcon's feet & talons) is Macrocarpa. It is 680mm tall x 600mm x 400mm. Feathers textured with pyrography. Birds painted with acrylics. Hung with rod embedded in wing. Completed October 2021.

Turned from a beautiful piece of Jarrah burl, bought back in the late 80’s in Western Australia. Turned to an even thickness of 7mm, apart from the rim, with Haarlem oil finish, pyrography and weaving.
The Kohekohe plate has been created from a burr salvaged from a windblown tree washed up on an East Coast beach. A pleasure to create. Diameter is 215mm.
This Totara tree had a rare disease called kaikaka which looks similar to bug infestation

This Kea has been carved from Totara, painted and sealed.
The backboard has been carved in MDF to represent the Kea's natural habitat
Small bowl turned on the lathe from Oamaru Stone, with Matai Wood used to turn the bowl insert and foot. Finishing wax used on the wood features.
